Require Learner Participation
Student Practice Activities
Each of the Daily 5 activities (Listen to Reading, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Writing) are introduced one at a time. This process allows students to become familiar with the activity and practice building stamina. To engage students mentally, the teacher models the activity, has a student model the activity, and then provides time for the students to practice. The teacher answers any questions the students may have and allows students to improve and build stamina. The goal is for the students to be engaged in each of the activities for 20 minutes. Once all activities have been introduced, students practice these activities on a daily basis.
Learning is supported by technology and media through the daily use of laptops, headphones, and Promethean board. Students listen to stories and respond to writing responses on the laptop. They also use laptops to access www.thinkcentral.com, the website that corresponds with their reading series, Journeys, in order to read to self and read to someone. Students perform word work activities on the Promethean board.
Feedback
The teacher provides oral feedback (from observations) on a daily basis to students. This allows students to immediately fix any behavior issues and helps with the students’ understanding of the activities. The student is also provided with feedback from a checklist completed several times throughout the month by the teacher (see below).
