Selecting Strategies and Materials
Select Strategies
The strategy selected is the Station Rotation Model, in which the students will be learning through teacher-led instruction, collaborative activities and stations, and online instruction. They will rotate through each of these activities. The teacher-led instruction will consist of guided reading groups, running records, reinforcement of literacy skills aligned with the Journeys curriculum, and reinforcement of vocabulary and spelling words. The collaborative activities will consist of students reading together and working on writing journal prompts together. During online instruction, students will conduct their own learning using online resources available. They will choose one of the 5 activities (Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, or Listen to Reading), retrieve the resources needed to complete the activity, and work independently on the program needed to complete the activity.
Select Resources
Technology and Media. This lesson involves the continued use of the following online resources: ThinkCentral.com (Read to Self), Skype (Read to Someone), Kidblog.org (Work on Writing), ActivInspire (Word Work), and Storylineonline.net (Listen to Reading). This lesson calls for laptop or desktop computers to access the programs, headphones to listen to reading, and the Promethean board to complete word work. The following guidelines help me assess the appropriateness of my technology and media selections:
Select Materials
This lesson includes a teacher-produced checklist so students are able to record their online instruction activity (shown below). I was able to use materials already available in the classroom, which include: desktop computers, laptop computers, headphones, Promethean board, whiteboards, dry erase markers, Journeys textbooks, writing journals, and pencils.

The following guidelines help me assess the appropriateness of my technology and media selections:
- Alignment with standards, outcomes, and objectives. The software provides the necessary tools for my students to meet both curriculum and technology standards stated in Part 2.
- Accurate and current information. The software is accurate and current.
- Age-appropriate language. The software applications are written at a level appropriate for 2nd grade students.
- Interest level and engagement. The software applications engage students because the applications used are interactive. Students enjoy completing online instruction because it varies depending on the activity chosen.
- Technical quality. The software applications have superior technical quality.
- Ease of use. The applications require initial training and periodic review in order for students to easily use. The teacher must monitor Kidblog prompts and word work activities and keep them up-to-date. After being trained, students can easily use the features.
- Bias free. The software applications are bias free.
- User guide and directions. Online help features are available on all online resources, but they are sometimes difficult to find/access or vague. Students seem to understand directions best when they are teacher-given. Students ask each other and the teacher for assistance if needed.
